Certain roads tend to host more crashes than others due to a variety of different factors. When rating how dangerous different roads are, safety experts tend to group them by type. Surface streets often see a huge volume of traffic. However, more frequent stops combined with lower speed limits make them less deadly than other types of roads.
Interstates or highways are among the most dangerous places to drive. The combination of very high speed limits and significant traffic density can lead to tragic outcomes. Even those who are generally safe at the wheel could end up involved in a multi-vehicle collision when a semi-truck jackknives or a drunk driver loses control at high speeds.
Any interstate is potentially dangerous, but some of them are deadlier than others. According to an analysis of traffic fatalities per mile, Indiana has some of the most dangerous interstates and highways in the country.
What roads host the most severe collisions?
There are many dangerous roads in Indiana. In fact, three of the deadliest highways in the country cross Indiana. Quite a few of the worst crashes every year occur on those high-speed, high-volume roads.
- Highway 41: Highway 41 is a perfect example. The highway runs parallel along the Illinois border from south of Evansville to the south side of Chicago. Highway 41 sees an average of 7.02 deaths per 100 miles annually.
- Interstate 80: The second-deadliest highway in Indiana crosses Northern Indiana. Interstate 80 (I-80) includes the Borman Expressway, and it averages 7.21 deaths per 100 miles.
- Interstate 70: The most dangerous interstate in Indiana is Interstate 70 (I-70). The road stretches from Terre Haute into Ohio. Roughly 7.35 people lose their lives per 100 miles of I-70. It is the deadliest highway in the state and one of the most dangerous roads in the entire country.
Clearly, drivers in Indiana can’t just bypass three of the most used interstates in the region. If they do end up in crashes when traveling on Highway 41, I-80 or I-70, they may need assistance pursuing justice. Filing insurance claims or civil lawsuits can potentially help people cover the costs associated with an injurious motor vehicle collision.
